Point of view / Steve Hundley

Innovation starts with the business.

Start with what needs to work better. Then imagine the technology that could make it possible.

My passion is helping real-estate mega teams. I’ve run that kind of operation, and I know how difficult it can be to scale.

There is the rainmaker generating business, and there are the team agents carrying that opportunity forward. Protecting the brand, developing capable agents, managing leads and creating accountability all matter. Marketing is one layer of a much larger operation.

Start with what needs to work better.

Someone may come to me saying, “I need a CRM.” My question is what they need their business to do better. A CRM may be part of the answer. It may not be the whole answer.

I don’t want the limits of what is already on the shelf to become the limits of what we imagine. We build things that don’t yet exist because we start with the business and model the software around it.

That is what iStrategy means to me: bringing an idea to life in a way that improves how people work.

The invisible assistant.

My ambition for Paisley is an invisible assistant: software that understands the work people need to do, helps with the busywork and becomes a natural part of the way they operate.

That is a design direction, not a claim that every capability is available today. I want the value to be felt in the work getting done.

Buying is only the beginning.

I use three terms in my own shorthand: adapt, adopt and use.

  • Adapt: someone buys the product.
  • Adopt: they begin using it, but can still live without it.
  • Use: it becomes so valuable in their work that they would not want to be without it.

The mobile phone is my benchmark for that last stage. I want to build software that earns that kind of importance through what it does for people.

Before choosing a software category, ask: what needs to work better in the business?
